Located at 99 Bridge St, the new Stone and Wood brewery is situated in the heritage listed Ice Stores. Complexities arose through the dilapidation report and discovery of structural problems with the existing slab leading to a redesign and structural solution to be put forth. The design brief called for materials and design to respond to the Byron bay facilities but retain a Queensland style. This led to the ‘backyard’ design intent.
The layout incorporated the simplicity of the ‘backyard’ beer garden, with lounge areas and a raised bar. A typical Queensland material pallet was selected including reclaimed timbers, corrugated siding, steel, red brick and concrete. Internal planting softens the interaction between the existing and the new, whilst the material selection retained links to the heritage architecture of the Ice Stores.
